How we source and verify mover data

Everything we publish about a moving company comes from public federal records — and where the record is silent, we say so rather than guess. Here’s exactly how it works.

Where the data comes from

All mover data on MovingRated is sourced from public-domain U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) records — the same records the government publishes:

  • FMCSA Company Census — identity, USDOT/MC numbers, entity type (carrier / broker / freight forwarder), household-goods authority, operating-authority status, and fleet size.
  • FMCSA QCMobile — insurance on file (BIPD / cargo / bond), safety rating, out-of-service status, and inspection history, pulled per USDOT number.

We cover 72,683 registered household-goods movers across all 50 states and DC.

What we do — and never do — with it

  • We publish the facts as they are. Operating authority, insurance status, and safety rating are shown straight from the FMCSA record.
  • We never invent ratings. No star scores, no “MovingRated score,” no reviews we can’t source. Where FMCSA has no data — for example, a mover with no safety rating on file — we show “Not rated,” never a guess.
  • We link you to the source. Every mover profile and every tool result carries a live verify at FMCSA.gov link so you can confirm it yourself.
  • We are not a broker. MovingRated does not arrange moves, take bookings, or collect your contact details. We are an independent information publisher.

How our tools read the record

The scam detector and the comparison toolderive their read only from real FMCSA fields — active authority, insurance on file, out-of-service status, and safety rating — combined with the red flags you report. There is no hidden score: every factor is listed in plain English with a link to verify.

Freshness

Each record shows the date its data was pulled. We refresh from FMCSA on a monthly cadence. Federal status can change between refreshes, so a clean record here is reassuring but never a substitute for confirming the mover live at FMCSA before you book.

Independence

MovingRated is reader-supported — we earn from ads and some clearly labeled affiliate links, at no extra cost to you. That never affects the data, the tools, or the guidance. See our editorial standards and how we make money.
