How mover licensing works in California

A move that crosses state lines is regulated federally by the FMCSA, and every legitimate interstate mover has a USDOT number you can confirm at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. A move that stays inside California is regulated by the state. In California that is the Bureau of Household Goods and Services (BHGS), California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA). Note: regulatory authority transferred from California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to BHGS effective July 1, 2018., which issues a state mover license or registration you can verify directly. Our mover licensing guide walks through both checks step by step.
